Chennai engineering college students win gold at international competition

Gayathri Vijayakumar, associate professor of Biotechnology in the college, which is affiliated to the Anna University, said International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation, an independent, non-profit organisation, held the competition in synthetic biology.

Twenty-five students worked on the project which was part of the environment track. The contest was held at Porte de Versailles, France, in October. The college’s project was among the five shortlisted from across the world.

The team from Rajalakshmi Engineering College that won the iGEM contest award for their project.

Called Curlim, the project aimed to remove toxic cadmium ions from industry effluents using genetic engineering and synthetic biology tools. The team genetically engineered escerichia coli bacteria and modified its DNA. The bacteria can precipitate cadmium ions from the effluent (wastewater from industries) by expressing the enzyme acid phosphatase on the membrane, Ms. Gayathri said.

“We got the best environment track award. Under the environmental track, 50 teams from across the world submitted projects. From India, there were 14 teams — 12 were from national institutes like IITs, IISER and IISc Bengaluru. The two private entries were from VIT Vellore and Rajalakhsmi Engineering College, Chennai,” she added.

Noida Authority e-auctions 6 commercial plots for around Rs 2,700 crore

The Noida Authority has e-auctioned six commercial-builder plots for around Rs 2,700 crore, the Authority said in a statement on November 15. These plots, in different sectors, have a total area of over 82,949 sq m.

According to the statement, there were five participants — Aditya Infracorporation Pvt Ltd, Designarch Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, Purvanchal Projects Pvt Ltd, Lavish Buildmart Pvt Ltd (M3M) and Avenue Supermart Ltd.

JEE Main to NEET to CUET: NTA to Release Exam Calendar 2023 Soon, Know Tentative Dates

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be releasing the academic calendar for 2023 in December. JEE Main to NEET to CUCET, the NTA will release the tentative dates of the exams as well as the notification release dates along with the calendar. Almost all major national-level exams are held by the NTA.

After two-year-long delay in exams, NTA is bringing back the exams to their original schedule. Here is the tentative schedule of exams held by NTA -

JEE Main 2023: The notification for the engineering entrance exam will be released in the third week of November. Along with the notification, the registration-cum-application forms will be available at jeemain.nta.nic.in. JEE Main 2023 session 1 will be held in January and session 2 in April. The application forms for the second session will be out by March.

NEET 2023: The notification for the medical entrance, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2023 will be released in March and the exam will be held on the first Sunday of May 2023. Along with the notification, the application-cum-registration forms will be released at neet.nta.nic.in.

CUET 2023: The common entrance test will be held after the Boards. The class 10 and class 12 board exams will be held from February 15 onwards and are expected to conclude by March. The CUET for entrance to colleges will be held after boards. UGC chairperson had said that CUET could be held twice a year, however, after the glitches in exam this year, the exam dates are not yet out.

UGC NET: The exam used to be held by UGC and is now conducted by NTA. The exam is held twice a year, however, since the pandemic, the National Eligibility Test is being held in merged attempts. This year too, December 2021 and June 2022 exam cycles were merged. Since the NTA is slowly bringing all exams back to their original schedules, the NET exam dates are expected to be spanned out too, however, exam dates are not yet unknown.Read More

On Sunday, she posted a montage comprising videos of her “last couple of days” in the city. It showed her attending the Nykaa event for her haircare brand Anomaly along with her team and Nykaa CEO Falguni Nayar. Priyanka expressed, in the caption, that “there’s really is nothing like coming home.” She wrote, “And it’s a wrap on Mumbai. Ghar ki baat hi alag hai. There really is nothing like coming home. These last couple of days, I’ve been so moved by all the love and support that has been shown to me. I can honestly say if weren’t for all of you that showed up and my team, I don’t know where I would be.”

Lunar eclipse 2022: Where in India can you watch Blood Moon

The Moon will turn a reddish hue on November 8 in the last total lunar eclipse that the Earth will see for three years. Many cities across the world will get to witness this celestial spectacle.

The eclipse will be visible across North and Central America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

But not all places will be able to see the red-hued Moon. In India, the phase of beginning of the totality, where the moon in completely in the Earth’s shadow, will not be seen anywhere, the Ministry of Earth Science said.

However, the eastern states can catch a glimpse of the red hue in the “totality ending” phase. This is the phase where the Moon exits Earth’s umbra and the dimming red colour can be seen.

During a lunar eclipse, the Moon turns red because of a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering.

When there is an eclipse, the only sunlight reaching the Moon goes through the earth’s atmosphere.

“ The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear,” NASA explained. “It’s as if all the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon.”

Since the last couple of years, South Indian films — be they Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Kannada, have been ruling the hearts of millions as well as performing extremely well at the box office. But this wasn’t how things were always. In a recent chat, pan India star Yash — who has predominantly worked in the Kannada film industry, opened up about how North India perceived South films.

Yash continued, “That’s how it started and eventually they got hooked on to that and they started understanding that art form. The problem with that was our films were sold for a bare minimum price, people used to do bad quality dubbing and it used to be presented in a bad way with funny names.” The Kannada star then noted that over the years, familiarity with this genre of cinema warmed viewers to films from the south.

Crediting RRR and Baahubali maker SS Rajamouli for helping in bringing about that change, the ‘Santhu Straight Forward’ actor said, “People started becoming familiar with our dubbed films. It was long pending. Credit goes to SS Rajamouli sir. If you have to break a rock, continuous effort is needed. Baahubali gave that push.” Yash concluded by saying, “KGF was done with a different intention. What KGF was that it was not done to intimidate, but to inspire. People have now started noticing South films.”

For a couple of decades now, films from Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada industries are airing on TV channels in the north with Hindi dubbing. Over time, these films developed a cult following and led to the viewers generating interest in the industries in general.

Talking about the impact of South Indian films in India currently, Yash’s KGF Chapter 2 is the highest-grossing Indian film of 2022 so far, with an India nett collection of 434.62 Cr. Following its lead is SS Rajamouli’s RRR with 277 Cr India Nett.

SBI shares zoom on 74% surge in Q2 net profit; analysts raise targets, estimates

Investors lapped up shares of State Bank of India (SBI) on November 7 after the company reported a strong, all-around performance for the quarter ended September 2022, leading to earnings well above what analysts had estimated.

The state-owned lender said its net profit surged 74 percent from a year earlier on improved asset quality and healthy loan growth. Its net interest income rose 12.83 percent to Rs 35,183 crore for the reported quarter, keeping with the improving trend of the previous two quarters.

Credit growth during the quarter was remarkable, beating even some of the top private banks. The largest lender of the country said the loan growth of over 20 percent year-on-year lifted core interest income and also operating profit growth.

Analysts at HDFC Securities underlined that net interest margin (NIM) reflation was sharper than expected at 3.2 percent (a rise of 15 bps sequentially) and is expected to improve further in the near term, with full MCLR impact yet to play out.Read More
