Centre to Review WhatsApp's Upcoming Username Feature Amid Online Fraud Concerns

The Central government is expected to examine WhatsApp's upcoming username-based messaging feature over concerns that it could be misused for online fraud, according to sources. Officials will assess the feature's privacy and security safeguards, and Meta may face a notice if any concerns or irregularities are identified during the review.

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new feature that will allow users to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing their mobile numbers. The company says the move is intended to improve user privacy by reducing the need to disclose phone numbers, particularly while chatting with new contacts or in group conversations.

Sources said the government plans to closely study the feature as India continues to witness a rise in cyber fraud and digital scams. The review will focus on whether the username system provides adequate protection against impersonation and fraudulent activities while maintaining user privacy.

If officials find shortcomings in the feature's implementation or security measures, Meta could be asked to explain the system or take corrective steps, sources added.

WhatsApp has announced that the feature will be introduced gradually over the coming months. Users will have the option to create and reserve a unique username through the mobile app, though using a username will not be mandatory. The platform will also allow users to change or remove their usernames whenever they choose.

The feature will support conversations without revealing mobile numbers, while existing safety tools such as blocking and reporting suspicious accounts will continue to remain available.

According to WhatsApp, usernames can contain up to 35 characters, and names associated with prominent public figures and celebrities will be protected to prevent impersonation. During the initial rollout, username reservation will only be available through the mobile app and not via WhatsApp Web or desktop applications.

The company also plans to let businesses, creators, and organisations use the same usernames they already have on Instagram or Facebook, while other users can link their Meta accounts to maintain a consistent identity across platforms.

Addressing concerns over potential misuse, WhatsApp said it has built multiple layers of protection to detect abuse and plans to introduce optional username keys—unique numeric codes that users can share alongside their usernames to help verify their identity and reduce impersonation risks.

The messaging platform has maintained that end-to-end encryption for personal chats will remain unchanged, even as it expands privacy-focused features for users worldwide.

Passengers choosing the Lite fare can carry one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg and will receive an automatically assigned seat at no additional cost. Those requiring extra services, including checked baggage, preferred seat selection, onboard meals, or priority services such as Fast Forward, can purchase them separately through the airline or at the airport up to one hour before departure.

The airline also confirmed that customers travelling under the Lite fare will remain eligible to earn and redeem IndiGo BluChip loyalty points.

Announcing the new offering, IndiGo Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh said the fare has been introduced to provide greater flexibility for travellers who prefer to fly light and pay only for the services they use.

With the addition of IndiGo Lite, the airline's 6E Ways to Fly portfolio now includes Saver, Flexi Plus, IndiGo UpFront, IndiGoStretch, Stretch+, and Lite, giving passengers a wider range of fare options tailored to different travel needs and budgets.

Annamalai Reaffirms 'DMK Files' Allegations After TR Baalu Withdraws Defamation Case

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Tuesday said that DMK MP TR Baalu has withdrawn the Rs 100-crore defamation suit filed against him over the "DMK Files" allegations. Responding to the development, Annamalai maintained that he continues to stand by every allegation he had made concerning the previous DMK government and several of its leaders.

In a statement shared on X, Annamalai recalled that the defamation case was initiated after he released details through his "DMK Files" campaign, alleging that Baalu and his family owned substantial assets and companies. According to him, the lawsuit sought Rs 100 crore in damages.

Annamalai said that as the proceedings progressed, he chose to argue the matter himself and personally cross-examined Baalu in court. He noted that the details of the trial have already been reported publicly.

The BJP leader further claimed that Baalu made baseless defamatory remarks against him during one of the court hearings, prompting him to file a separate legal case against the senior DMK leader.

Commenting on the withdrawal of the suit, Annamalai said the decision rested entirely with Baalu, as he was the one who had initiated the legal proceedings. He added that the withdrawal does not alter his position on the allegations made through the "DMK Files" campaign.

Expressing gratitude to advocates Paul Kanagaraj, Kumaraguru, and members of the BJP legal team for their support during the case, Annamalai concluded his statement by saying, "Truth always triumphs!"

The announcement comes as Annamalai's recently launched "We the Leaders" movement moves closer to becoming a political party. He has stated that the organisation plans to enrol 50 lakh members and present itself as a people-focused political alternative in Tamil Nadu, with an emphasis on governance, corruption, and tackling the state's growing drug menace.

Farhan Akhtar Reveals Why He Cast Shah Rukh Khan Over Hrithik Roshan in Don

In a candid conversation with Raj Shamani on his podcast, Farhan revealed that he had approached Hrithik Roshan before even starting to write the script. At the time, Akhtar was still reeling from the box office performance of Lakshya and felt that remaking Don could be a fresh start. Hrithik, initially excited about the idea, was supportive of Farhan's vision.

However, as Farhan began developing the screenplay, he found that Shah Rukh Khan's "personality, wit, and sarcastic humor" increasingly seemed ideal for the role. Farhan explained, “While writing it, the only person whose face kept popping into my head was Shah Rukh. His inherent charm and ability to bring a unique energy to the character made him the perfect choice.”

When Farhan reached out to Hrithik to explain the shift, Roshan responded with remarkable grace, saying, "You have to make your film the way you want to. If you feel Shah Rukh is the guy, please go ahead and call him. Don’t worry about me." Hrithik later made a memorable cameo in Don 2.

Farhan praised Shah Rukh Khan not only for his screen presence but also for his off-screen attributes. He described Khan as "exceptionally charming and knowledgeable," noting his wide-ranging interests and engaging personality. "Shah Rukh can talk about any topic with depth and has a natural charisma that makes him enjoyable to be around," Farhan added.

Looking ahead, Farhan Akhtar is gearing up to work with Ranveer Singh on Don 3, promising more exciting developments in the franchise.
